Each year there is one early weekend – one glorious (if brief!) window – the effect of which is to renew afresh our faith in the continuing cycle of the seasons. However hard the winter may have been (and in terms of storm and deluge this one has been tough indeed) we can once again see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are alerted by the cry of the distant harbinger… “Spring is coming”!!
This was such a weekend…
To the National Theatre earlier this week to catch the inestimable Simon Russell Beale as Lear (he magnificent – the production something of a curate’s egg!). As I hurried along the embankment to meet the Kickass Canada Girl for for a little pre-show sushi I was struck by the beauty of the half-light of the Capital’s dusk. Barely breaking my stride I whipped the the x10 from my new messenger bag (of which more possibly later) and fired off a handful of shots.

Sitting in Vancouver International waiting for the flight home is always a sad time. We have said goodbye and many, many, many thanks to all of our dear friends in Victoria and must now wend our weary way back to the UK, to be thrown immediately into the maelstrom of work. The Kickass Canada Girl has discovered that her charity is to be inspected almost immediately on our return – so clearly little recovery time will afforded to us.

In Victoria – whence we travel tomorrow – the temperature is a relatively balmy 3-5 degrees Celsius and any snow that has fallen will doubtless vanish within a day or so. Here in Kamloops, on the other hand – where we commenced our Canadian Odyssey – the temperature on day one was a brisk -7C – and considerably less than that once wind-chill was taken into account.
Preparations for Christmas are well in hand…

Having been up to ‘town’ over the weekend for an entirely agreeable social occasion we found ourselves strolling back to Waterloo along the south bank of the Thames as dusk encroached. The quality of the light was such that I could not resist un-holstering the Fuji x10 and firing off a few shots…
Nature – splendidly – works to its own rhythm, rhyme and reason. Here – in the last week of November – we are finally seeing the sort of autumnal display that I more normally associate with the end of October. The leaves have really only just begun to fall properly now and at this rate the trees will not be bare before we head across the water to Canada.

This is the second week of the fortnight’s respite that pupils at the School are granted during which to recover from the rigours of the first half of the autumn term, preparatory to the increasingly intense run up to Christmas. In true public school tradition this break is not known as ‘half term’, but rather – oddly, though quite appositely – as ‘Remedy’.
Having much to do I was in the office during the first week of the break, but I have taken all bar one day this week as my very own ‘remedy’ – to try to catch up on some sleep and on other pursuits for which there has been little time of late.
I had intended to get out and about with the Fuji x10 to take some snaps of the autumn colours – much as I did on this very day last year. This time around – however – autumn is late! The mild weather has persisted and the leaves have stubbornly refused to turn. Pehaps like us – having finally enjoyed a summer worthy of the name – they are reluctant to let go of it. Even Sunday night’s much heralded storm (named for St Jude’s Day – the patron saint for the hopeless and the despaired!) failed to strip the trees of their frondescence.
